Hervé Di Rosa studied in the École Nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In 1979 he had his first shows in Paris, Amsterdam, and New York when he was 20. In 1981, the first exhibition of Figuration Libre took place, mouvement he was co-founder with Rémi Blanchard, François Boisrond, and Robert Combas. In 1984-1985 he lived and worked in New York thanks to a Prix de la Villa Médicis Hors les murs. In 1993, he began to diversify his technics. He started a world tour to work with artisans in Tunisia, Bulgaria, Ghana, Benin, Vietnam, South Africa, Ethiopia, Mexico, Cuba, USA, Corsica, Cameroun, and Portugal, where he lives and works now. Without claiming any particular style, he developped a singular universe with a whole mythology of recurrent characters. He practised a lot of different technics of creation: painting, sculpture, woven telephone cables, laquers, anime, « tissus appliqués », tapestry, and engraving. He invented the notion of « art modeste », and in 2000, he founded the Miam (Musée International des arts modestes) in Sète, where he presents marginal art forms and artists from all over the world and challenges the frontiers of contemporary art. Hervé Di Rosa had more than 200 personal exhibitions in 30 different countries. His work is present in numerous private and public collections in France, Europe, America and Asia. Personal data
