Can creativity change the world? Yes! This piece tells how my Mom’s creativity changed my world. She was a fine artist, and when I was very young, she passed her love of art to me. We would sit together, I would hold the pencil, and she would put her hand over mine, and we would draw together. Throughout my childhood, she was my constant supporter, allowing me to find my way as an artist. Unfortunately, cancer took her, and she died young, thirty-six years ago, and it’s been over forty-five since we would draw together. But when I draw, I can almost feel her hand over mine, and I can still feel the bond we created drawing together. I still miss her terribly, but thanks to the gift she gave me, she is right there with me when I am making my art. Archival Fund

Harry Michalakeas is a self taught British contemporary artist. Born and raised in England, he emigrated to America in 2002. His work, which is usually monochromatic and primarily done in pastel, charcoal and carbon, is a blend of realism and surrealism. Stopping short of hyper-realism, it’s a heightened, stylized realism, which often delves into life’s darker topics. Since 2015, his work has been featured in over thirty group exhibitions around the country, and he is currently working on material for his first solo show. Personal data
