This notebook chronicles the first three years of Mafwa Theatre, highlighting four early projects that laid the foundation of our company. As people working with refugees, we understand the importance of journeys and the significance of the places we come from. This notebook is a tribute to our own journey, reflecting on where we've been and honouring the people who have shaped Mafwa into the company it is today. Within these pages, you will find a series of scrapbooks and collages featuring photos, artwork, and words from the people we've had the privilege of working with.
Created and compiled by Molly McGee for Mafwa Theatre.
Mafwa Theatre is a community-based Theatre of Sanctuary based in Leeds, UK. It is made up of people from different migration backgrounds: refugees, asylum seekers, and local, settled communities who face struggles of social isolation, deprivation, and language barriers. We use drama and the arts to create work that celebrates our similarities and differences, brings people together and speaks truth to power. We use our platform to highlight and enable development opportunities for artists and theatre makers from migrant backgrounds, advocate for migrant rights and celebrate diverse communities. We are the only arts organisation in Leeds focussing on work specifically with and for people who have lived experience of seeking sanctuary.
